Fall is upon us here in Rhode Island. With it comes brilliant colors, cooler temperatures, and the harsh reality that cold winter air is on its way. With the onset of cold weather comes cold floors and cold feet. Keeping your floors toasty warm this winter is not difficult with a bit of planning.

  • Underlayment – Flooring products such as wood, linoleum, and vinyl are great options for high traffic areas of the home. The downside of these versatile products is that they often will take on the temperature of whatever surface they are installed over. An underlayment placed between the subfloor and the flooring is an excellent way to improve the warmth of the area by blocking out the cold and increasing the air circulation.
  • Radiant heat –  Radiant heat is a special type of underlayment installed on top of the subfloor and beneath the flooring. The purpose of the radiant heat is to warm the area under the floor. This warmth moves upward into the flooring as well as the rest of the room, warming your feet as well as the entire space. It is a great option under tile but also works well under plank vinyl and even wood floors.
  • Area rugs – Rugs are an inexpensive and easy solution for floors, and can also add personality to your space. They make the entire room feel more inviting while giving you a warm spot to land your feet. In addition, rugs define different areas of your room such as reading nooks and conversation areas.
  • Carpet – Like area rugs, carpet is an excellent way to add warmth and personality to your space. It is among the most popular flooring solutions for bedrooms and living areas. In addition, it helps to insulate the space, keeping drafts out and warm air in.
  • Cork – This unique flooring option is unexpectedly warm. Because it is constructed with tiny air pockets that make up the flooring’s structure, it creates a cushion of insulation, keeping warm air in and cold air out. In addition, it is not complicated to install and can placed directly over most subflooring.
  • Vinyl – When combined with an underlayment, vinyl is a warm, inexpensive, and easy to maintain flooring solution.

Let’s face it: doing chores around the house is nobody’s favorite thing to do. But there are few cleaning jobs as tiresome or as frustrating as scrubbing the floors. It seems that the moment the floors are spotless and in pristine condition, something immediately occurs to make them dirty again.

We at Valley Floor Coverings are just like you: we like a clean floor, and we admit that there are certain times of the year that keeping our floor clean is harder than others. While it’s certainly a frustrating problem, luckily, it is a problem with a few quick and simple solutions.

If you live in a land-locked city and love the beach, infusing tropical design into your home can allow you to enjoy the beauty of your vacations year-round.

Pamela Hastings, a Florida-based designer and member of the American Society of Interior Designers, has brought the beach into seaside, mountain, and urban spaces. She believes tropical elements can enhance any space, as long as the touches are subtle.

“You don’t want your space to look like a rental condo,” Hastings says. “You don’t need to be too literal.” Just a few carefully chosen accessories, furnishings, or fabrics can bring the tranquility of a beach vacation right into your home.

There’s no getting around it. Flooring in a home is one of the most investments in a home. It’s in every room, it suffers the most wear and tear, it contributes to the style and decor of the home, and it can define how easy it is to keep your home cleanly and allergen free. From muddy cleats, to shedding dogs, to salt stains from snowboots, it’s important to pick a flooring option that can withstand the way a family lives while also maintaining a stylish, modern look. One of the most sought after flooring option on the market today in luxury vinyl flooring (LVF).

Luxury vinyl has been used almost exclusively by designers and stylists for years and until now, hasn’t been utilized by the average homeowner. Now, it has taken over the flooring market. The benefits of installing LVF in a home are substantial, which is why it has become such a popular option over the years.

It’s Tough
LVF is like the Terminator, there’s really no stain, scuff, or mark that can ruin it. It’s also flame resistant as well as slip resistant. The common thickness of LVF is generally 20mm . The material is comprised of layers resistant to wear and tear. The top layer is covered with a coating to enhance this durability. The durability of LVF is so substantial that it is often used in high traffic areas of commercial buildings as well as residential homes.

It’s Cheap
LVF is a fraction of the price of real hardwood, tile or stone floors. The best part is that LVF can be manufactured to match the look and textures of these materials. This saves homeowners and developers a fortune while achieving a more expensive, modern look in their home. More money is saved when it comes to upkeep. Cleaning LVF is as easy as wiping it down with a damp mop.

It’s Green
LVF, when made from completely vinyl materials, can meet Green  building standards and can meet the requirements for LEED points when used for commercial buildings.
